What Is Hair Loss
Hair loss is a normal process in the body, and the loss of hair will follow the normal cycle of hair growth. The hair growth of a person usually lasts for 2 to 6 years with each hair growing a centimeter per month during this hair cycle. And around 90 percent of the hair of a person is growing at any point during that time, and the other 10 percent of the hair is resting at that point. Now the ‘resting hair’ starts to fall apart after 2 or 3 months and this are what people know as hair loss. The hair that fell will be replaced by new ones that will grow in its place.
It is normal to shed a significant amount of hair during that cycle. But there are times wherein the amount of hair that is lost is excessive, and this type of hair loss may offer a number of inconveniences to the sufferer. This kind of hair loss can happen to anyone of any age and gender. So what can cause that significant hair loss in one person? The reasons are numerous and depend on the person.
An excessive hair loss may happen on one person if that person has undergone a surgery. The sudden hair loss may happen around 3 to 4 months after the surgery, and the loss of hair can be linked to the illness and this is just temporary. Another factor that can cause hair loss can be hormonal in nature. For example, if the thyroid gland is active or underactive, then falling hair can be expected. So this means that the treatment for this type of hair loss will involve the thyroid glands. Hair loss can also happen if the androgens and the estrogens are not in balance. So correcting the balance between these hormones may stop hair loss. For most women, a significant hair loss may happen around three months after she delivered her baby. Again, the hair loss of this nature can be traced to hormones. This happens since during pregnancy, the high levels of some hormones will allow the hair to stay at its place that would normally fall out. So when the hormone levels return back to normal after pregnancy, it is expected that the hair will fall.
Medicines are known factors as well that can initiate hair loss in a person. This kind of hair loss may happen to a person if that person will stop the intake of that particular medicine. Some of the drugs that can lead to hair loss include blood thinners and medicines that are used for gout, chemotherapy and other drugs that are used to treat cancer. If the intake of vitamin A is too much, then this can lead as well to hair loss. Some infections can lead to hair loss, like fungal infection on the scalp. This normally happens to children and this can be treated by using antifungal medicines. Hair loss is also indicative of another health issue such as lupus or diabetes.
